Entry requirements

Our clients often prefer Cost Accountants with accounting experience from the manufacturing or FMCG industries.

A strong understanding of accounting systems and software is also often required, and having a relevant accounting, finance or business degree would be advantageous.

What could you be doing?

A Cost Accountant’s primary role is to manage the costs of supplied materials and production for their business. For this reason, Cost Accountants are most commonly found in the manufacturing and FMCG industries. Typically, Cost Accountants may report to either the Financial Controller, Accounting/Finance Manager, or Plant Controller.

Typical day-to-day duties can include:

• Managing and reporting standard costs for internationally and locally imported manufactured products and materials
• Analysing all costs and producing profit and loss statements
• Managing costing budgets and providing variance analysis
• Developing and maintain costing systems
• Providing inventory control and reconciliation
• Provision of support to the business

Progression

After several years’ working as a Cost Accountant, you may expect to move into a more senior accounting role or management position.

Who makes a great Cost Accountant?

A CA or CPA qualified Accountant or an Accountant who has nearly finished their chartered qualification, and has a solid understanding of modern financial systems, budgeting, and forecasting. You will also need to be enthusiastic and an excellent communicator, have a keen eye for detail, and the ability to juggle workloads and deadlines without breaking a sweat.
