Entry requirements

Our clients often prefer candidates for Assistant Accountant positions to have previous accounting experience and exposure to common accounting systems such as MYOB or Xero. If the role includes Payroll duties, then experience in Payroll is usually required.

In many instances, holding a relevant business or accounting qualification, or studying towards full membership of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), will be advantageous.

What could you be doing?

The role of an Assistant Accountant is primarily to provide accounting support to a large accounting team or department, or if within a smaller firm, to provide support to a Senior Accountant, Manager, Financial Controller or CFO.

Typical day-to-day duties can include:

• Accounts Payable/Receivable processing
• Invoicing & billing control
• Bank reconciliations & month-end
• Accounting systems administration
• Supporting accounting team, Manager or CFO as required

Progression

After several years working as an Assistant Accountant, you may expect to move into a more senior accounting position.

• Company Accountant
• Financial Accountant
• Management Accountant

Who makes a great Assistant Accountant?

A CA or CPA qualified Accountant or an Accountant who has nearly finished their chartered qualification, and has a solid understanding of modern financial systems, budgeting, and forecasting. You will also need to be enthusiastic and an excellent communicator, have a keen eye for detail, and the ability to juggle workloads and deadlines without breaking a sweat.
